Irish Ambassador to Malaysia, Orla Tunney, delivered the opening address, reflecting on the longstanding business and cultural connections between Ireland and Penang. Quoting President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 speech to the Irish parliament, she remarked: "This has never been a rich or powerful country, and yet, since earliest times, its influence on the world has been rich and powerful." She underscored the importance of strengthening alliances between Irish and Malaysian businesses.

An eight-minute video presentation followed, tracing the deep-rooted ties between Ireland and Penang from the 18th century to today. It showcased key milestones and the vibrant exchanges between the two communities – educational, cultural, business and social. The video, designed by Adrian Cheah, was inspired by "Ireland – Penang: Bridging Friendships", a book co-authored by Maggie Territt and Barry Leddy and published by the Penang Irish Association (PIA) in 2015, which he also designed. With 23 years of collaboration with PIA, Adrian infused his passion for storytelling into both projects. Through evocative imagery, the video beautifully captured the enduring friendship between Ireland and Penang. Many of the photographs featured were Adrian’s own, bringing to life the energy and spirit of PIA events – friendships forged, traditions shared and heartfelt fundraising efforts supporting local charities.
