27 July 2024: A Celebration of Heritage – The Kebaya & Lagu Gala Dinner

As a cultural enthusiast, graphic designer and photographer, I always find great joy in capturing the essence of Penang's rich cultural diversity through my lens. The Kebaya & Lagu Gala Dinner, under the royal patronage of Their Royal Highnesses the Raja Muda of Kedah, His Excellency Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah ibni Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin and wife, the Raja Puan Muda of Kedah, Her Excellency Che Puan Muda Zaheeda Mohamad Ariff, sent a message of goodwill and friendship between two northern states sharing similar pre colonial and colonial histories. Organised by the Penang Jawi Peranakan Heritage Society, it was held at the elegant E&O Hotel on Saturday, 27 July 2024. The grandeur of the ballroom, with its timeless elegance and historical charm, set the perfect backdrop for an exciting evening dedicated to celebrating our vibrant cultural tapestry.

As guests arrived, resplendent in their traditional attire, they mingled gracefully, weaving a living tableau that celebrated the rich tapestry of our heritage. I was delighted to encounter many familiar faces – fellow members of the State Chinese (Penang) Association (SCPA), alongside friends both near and far. The women, adorned in exquisite kebayas, were a sight to behold, each garment whispering a story through its intricate embroidery and delicate motifs, reflecting the wearer’s personality and lineage. As I navigated this vibrant scene with my camera, I felt a profound appreciation for the kebayas, each a testament to our shared cultural legacy. At that moment, Helen Keller’s words resonated within me: "The most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched; they must be felt with the heart".

At the foyer of the ballroom, an enchanting array of booths enticed guests, showcasing kebayas, sarongs, kerongsangs, jewellery, Nyonya beaded shoes and books for sale. Among the vendors were Habib Jewels, John Ang, Cecelia Lim, Areca Books and Jawi House with the Jawi Society, their displays opening to the public at 3:30 pm and remaining accessible until the evening ended.

The evening was graced by the presence of royalty and esteemed guests, including His Excellency Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah and Her Excellency Che Puan Muda Zaheeda Mohamad Ariff. Also in attendance were the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, along with Datin Sri Zarida Noordin, Dato' Seri Nazir Ariff, Dato' Seri Meer Habib, Rashid Karim and Shahrul Aman. Welcoming these distinguished guests were the Chairman Prof Emerita Dato' Seri Dr Wazir Jahan Karim and the President, Nurilkarim Razha of the Penang Jawi Peranakan Heritage Society.

The Sireh Pinang dancers, carrying golden bouquets of Bunga Mas, accompanied the distinguished guests as they made their grand entrance into the ballroom. This vibrant tradition resonates with a rich history. In the 17th century, Bunga Mas was a tribute sent every three years by the Malay rulers of Kedah, Kelantan, Terengganu and Patani to the King of Siam in Bangkok, symbolising the bonds of friendship. Yet, this cherished custom ended with the establishment of British rule in most northern Malay states – a poignant reminder of how time can transform cultural practices, leaving behind echoes of their significance.

Once the guests were seated, the Sireh Pinang dancers, clad in elaborate costumes, gracefully performed the Rambong dance. This captivating display was followed by a welcoming address from Nurilkarim Razha, the president of the Penang Jawi Peranakan Heritage Society. In his speech, he discussed his role in leading the society and pledged to emphasise the Jawi Peranakan community's relevance in contemporary times. He extolled Penang’s diversity and remarked that the inclusivity practiced within the state should serve as a model for all levels of society, stating, “As a hybrid community enriched by mixed cultures and practices, we take pride in being inclusive, forward-thinking and progressive".

The event also featured the launch of "From Malay Garden to Table", a book by Dr Wazir and Nurilkarim, published by Areca Books and officiated by His Excellency Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah. Khoo Salma Nasution from Areca Books was also present.

This 256-page book offers over forty inventive recipes for sambals, kerabu, gulai and desserts made from homegrown greens and flowers. Executive Chef Nurilkarim of Jawi House blends permaculture principles with Jawi Peranakan cuisine, while Dr Wazir explores the culinary and medicinal uses of edible plants, showcasing the rich heritage and sustainable practices of Malaysian cooking.

Besides the Sireh Pinang dancers, the Sayang Sayang dancers, led by Dato' Lillian Tong, graced the floor with two mesmerising performances – one with handkerchiefs and the other with fans. The eight graceful Nyonyas, dressed in vibrant kebayas and matching sarongs, captivated the audience with their elegance and poise. A live band provided traditional Malay songs and ballads for the evening. When Nawiza Ariff took to the stage and belted out "Joget Pahang", guests eagerly flooded the dance floor to joget, adding to the night's vibrant and joyous atmosphere.

One of the evening's highlights was Cecelia Lim Siew Boon, the matriarch of needlework, receiving a well-deserved acknowledgment for her contributions to kebaya conservation. The Chief Minister of Penang presented her with a nomination letter, recognising her as the society's nominee for the Seri Mas Living Cultural Heritage Award and the prestigious Tokoh Negara Orang Hidup Award, also known as the National Living Heritage Award.

Knowing Cecelia for over two decades, I could not be happier for her. When my niece tied the knot in Australia, I introduced my sister Lillian to Cecelia, who crafted a stunning kebaya adorned with cranes and peonies for the memorable occasion. Lillian beamed as the radiant mother of the bride, thanks to Cecelia's exceptional artistry. Cecelia's creativity and craftsmanship are truly inspiring. She does not seek awards or recognition; she values customer satisfaction above all and has garnered a long list of satisfied clients over the years.

As the evening drew to a close, the excitement mounted during the lucky draw, with the grand prize generously sponsored by Habib Jewels. The table lucky draws presented by Rashid Karim, the Immediate Past President and Tamara Ibrahim who incidentally sewed  her own Kebaya for the occasion! I was out front below the stage area with my camera photographing the winners. I was thrilled when ticket number 1203 was called –  I had won a round cabochon smoky quartz pendant set in silver sponsored by Dato’ Sharifah Abdullah. I bounded up the stairs, my excitement bubbling over, when Her Excellency turned to me with a curious look and asked, “Who’s going to take your photo?” Without missing a beat, I pointed to the line of photographers before us. Nawiza Ariff walked away with the second prize, a lovely painting – “Syurga Kupu-kupu" by Dato’ Halimah Said, while Muhammad Hafiz was overjoyed to claim the grand prize.

Two special prizes were also awarded that evening. The “Ratu Kebaya” was Julie Cheong, a Nyonya from Melaka and the “Queen of the Nite” was Datin Seri Zalika Ahmad, a Penang Jawi Peranakan. They epitomised elegance, their stunning attire and graceful presence capturing the essence of our rich cultural heritage and timeless beauty.

A heartfelt thank you to all the sponsors and kudos to the organising committee and everyone who made the evening unforgettable. Behind the scenes was a dedicated team quietly ensuring the event's success – Fairooz Khaleeque Ahmad, Danial Tahir, Raqib Karim and James Lai.

With a heart full of gratitude and a camera filled with memories, I left the E&O Hotel that night, inspired by the evening’s festivities. The Kebaya & Lagu Gala Dinner had been more than just a grand celebration; it served as a poignant reminder of the beauty and resilience of our traditions. Through my photographs, I hope to share this wonderful evening with others, inspiring a deeper appreciation for our vibrant culture and heritage – one that is truly worth celebrating and preserving.
