When I was commissioned to photograph its interiors and capture its essence, I knew I was stepping into more than just a beautifully renovated space – I was about to witness the continuation of a piece of Penang’s living history.

A Storied Past – From Mansion to Hotel

The Leith Hotel’s origins trace back to the early 1900s when it stood as the elegant mansion of Cheah Cheang Lim, a distinguished tin mine owner, philanthropist and politician. Though he was born to a Penang Hokkien family in Taiping, Perak, he had always regarded Penang as his true home. Cheah, a prominent figure in Penang and Malaya, invested not only in economic ventures but also in significant social causes, championing the anti-opium movement and advocating for Chinese education in Malaya. His residence at 13 Leith Street, situated on what was then known as "Hakka Millionaire’s Row," was a symbol of his success. The mansion featured a harmonious architectural blend of European and Chinese styles, much like its neighbouring properties along the prestigious street, including the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion.

Following Cheah’s passing in 1948 at the age of 77, the mansion was offered for rent. During this period, Loke Seng Seong leased the property, converting the elegant home into the Waldorf Hotel in April 1951 after extensive repairs costing approximately $80,000. Later, Loke purchased the mansion and transformed its frontage, constructing a five-storey, mid-century modern-style hotel connected to the original building. Rooted in functionality, clean lines and simplicity, its mid-century modern design reflected the era's ethos. On 26 November 1968, Penang’s Chief Minister, Tan Sri Wong Pow Nee, officiated the hotel's grand opening in the new building. Known for its long baths, air-conditioning and modern amenities, the Waldorf became one of northern Malaysia’s top hotels in the 1960s.

However, over the decades, the Waldorf fell into decline, marred by management issues and conflicts over the direction of its shareholders. Once a lively representation of hospitality, the hotel sadly transitioned into a mere budget hotel.

In 2023, a new chapter unfolded with the leasing of the property by EVS Holdings Sdn Bhd, owned by Irama Dining Group and Evians Choong, who sought to revitalise No. 13. Thus, The Leith Hotel Penang was born, breathing new life into this historic building. The thoughtful redesign preserves much of the original architectural structure, seamlessly merging it with modern comforts and contemporary touches to offer an exceptional and comfortable experience for today's discerning travellers. The grand opening of The Leith took place on 29 September 2024, marking a significant milestone.

Capturing the New Elegance

Walking into The Leith for the photoshoot, I was immediately enveloped by the welcoming décor – an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary design. The green, white and black colour palette of the lobby, with its black-and-white floor tiles and beautifully curated furnishings bathed in both warm and natural light, created a chic, sophisticated aura that set the tone for the entire space.

As the renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa once expressed, "A building can only be understood by moving around and through it, experiencing the modulation and feeling the spaces one moves through – from outside into verandahs, then rooms, passages, courtyards. Architecture cannot be totally explained but must be experienced". I could not agree more. Lunuganga stands as an ode to a life left behind by Bawa, and I sensed that deep connection when I visited Sri Lanka. Architecture is, indeed, the art of space, and space is a way of life.

This philosophy resonates deeply with me, for the warmth and inviting atmosphere of The Leith – one that makes a place feel genuinely welcoming – serves as a testament to the care and creativity infused into its design by Arshad Kamarulzaman and his team. Under his creative direction, conceptual nouveau ideas have been transformed into living spaces that resonate with genuine care. Photographing The Leith was an incredibly rewarding experience, allowing me to capture a harmonious balance of space, natural light and thoughtfully designed decorative elements.

A Culinary Experience at Luffa

Beyond capturing the hotel’s interiors and rooms, my camera lens was treated to the visual feast that Luffa presented. This restaurant draws its strength from the distinct flavours of the East, incorporating inspirations from around the globe to create an array of dishes that are as beautiful to the eye as they are tantalising to the palate. Arshad, the visionary behind Luffa, has once again demonstrated his creative prowess in the culinary world. His ability to blend classic Eastern flavours with local herbs and spices is truly commendable, and I could not be prouder as he expands his culinary ventures.

Photographing The Leith Hotel has been an interesting project. It was not just about capturing rooms and spaces – it was about capturing the soul of a place. The Leith, with its beautifully restored interiors and historical resonance, offers an immersive experience for every visitor, making it a truly unique destination.

As a photographer, documenting this transformation was a privilege. I walked away from this project not only with a camera full of images but with a deep appreciation for the story behind every hallway and beam, every plate served at Luffa, and every guest who will experience the charm of The Leith.
