SPP 30th Anniversary Twin City Photo Exhibition: A Visual Extravaganza!
Embarking on a captivating photographic journey, the Society of Photographers Penang (SPP) commemorated its 30th Anniversary with a Twin City Photo Exhibition and a series of thrilling photography activities held at Gurney Walk from 7 to 15 December 2023.
In Penang, the spectacular Twin City Photo Exhibition not only unveiled the timeless allure of the UNESCO Heritage City of George Town but also cast a spotlight on the picturesque city of Zhangzhou. It was officiated by YB Wong Hon Wai ( Penang Exco for Tourism & Creative Economy), YB Syerleena Abdul Rashid (MP for Bukit Bendera) and Mr Kang (Representative for YB Joshua, ADUN Pulau Tikus). As the celebration took place in Penang, a parallel exhibition graced Zhangzhou, offering viewers there a captivating introduction to our very own Pearl of the Orient.
Penang's enchanting allure and vibrant spirit came alive in 100 breathtaking photographs by passionate SPP members. Among them were my four entries, showcasing the vibrant Chinese Peranakan traditions, capturing the mesmerising transformation of a Chinese Opera artiste, preserving the sizzling artistry of a Char Koay Teow hawker in his element and showcasing our beloved Uncle Ah Guan crafting his popular apong. Just like me, my fellow photographers at SPP are ceaselessly hunting for the next breathtaking shot. Residing in Penang, we revel in a bounty of opportunities in this photographic tropical paradise.
Zhangzhou, a coastal gem in southern Fujian province, spans approximately 12,600 square kilometres. Originally established as a county in 502–515 CE, it evolved into a prefecture by 686. The 100 captivating photographs of Zhangzhou in the exhibition hail from Minnan Daily (Zhangzhou) Media Development Co., Ltd., revealing its natural wonders and rich cultural heritage. This city has earned esteemed titles, including the National Historical and Cultural City, the National Culture Reserve, China's Best Tourist City and Fujian Province's Ecological City. Often referred to as China's daffodil capital, Zhangzhou is a true marvel.
Visitors stepped into Gurney Walk (ground floor) to enjoy this visual feast that captured the essence of the two cities. Through the lens, they experienced the soul and spirit of Penang and Zhangzhou. The exhibition aimed to foster mutual understanding between the people of these two cities.
Beyond the Twin City Photo Exhibition, SPP had invited photography societies from across Malaysia to exhibit their masterpieces on the first floor. In total, over 300 photographic works were on display; along with booths showcasing the latest cameras and photographic equipment, this nine-day event was a haven for photography enthusiasts.
