Australia Council Mourns The Passing Of Emil Goh

The Australia Council for the Arts mourns the passing of visual artist, curator and writer Emil Goh, at the age of 43.

Born in Malaysia, Emil studied sculpture and photography at the Sydney College of the Arts and received a Masters in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, London. In recent years he was based in Seoul, after receiving an Australia Council Visual Arts Board grant to undertake a residency in the city in 2004. He also had residencies at London's Hayward Gallery, Hong Kong University and the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester.

Emil exhibited extensively throughout Australia and internationally, with solo shows at Artspace, Sydney; Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, Adelaide; Karen Hamilton Gallery, London; and at Factory in Seoul. Earlier this year he participated in Aucklandís public art program, Living Room and exhibited in a group show at the National Gallery of Poland in 2008. In 2005 he showed at the Jakarta International Video Art Festival.

Kon Gouriotis, Director of the Australia Councilís Visual Arts Board said: ëHis photographs and video work captured everyday moments, transforming them into something extraordinary by showing the beauty that exists around us. He will be missed.

Emil's work is held in public collections such as Artbank and Parliament House, Canberra, as well as private collections in Australia and overseas.
