Concept Of Works

title: mapkin.com

When I visit new cities, I am always interested in where my friends who live there go. They are the places that are not the tourist destinations, but those which are special to them. We all have personal favourite places to buy our books & magazines, get our lunch or dessert, or something we like to look at that just makes us happy. Mapkin is a project that comes out of friends who draw maps on napkins for you at the cafe.

The main principles of maps have been addressed, where usually the author of the map is anonymous or institutional, the information is generic and impersonal and the target audience of the map is everybody. With MAPKIN.ORG, it is about a personal view of the the surrounding area one lives in and what makes things special for them. Whoever visits the site, will be like visiting a friend s neighbourhood, discovering their favourite spots!

What is showing at RE/MAP is a simulation of the proposed MAPKIN.ORG web site. It is planned that there will be a collection of mapkins of many cities of where I know people, as one of the main ideas of MAPKIN.ORG, is that there should be personal connection between me and the person making the mapkin. With the web site, we can see jpegs of the places on the mapkin, and there should be PDF file that a visitor can download for their walk around that neighbourhood.
