Sylvia Lee Goh's Second Solo Exhibition –
"Then and Now – the Enduring Heart"

VENUE: THE PENANG STATE ART GALLERY, DEWAN SRI PINANG
1ST TO 30TH APRIL 2016

On the afternoon of 22nd September 2015 at the 2nd Solo Exhibition "Then & Now - The Enduring Heart" in walked briskly a lady with a purpose. She had just arrived from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and was immediately whisked away to the National Visual Arts Gallery by her hosts, Dr. Peter and Inge-Marie Holst.

Dr. Helena Spanjaard looked left to right and exclaimed: "… the colours! thecolours! I have dealt with Indonesian art for 35 years. But this is different! Unique! Unique!".

Taken by surprised, the exhibiting artist looked on speechless. Never had she encountered a guest of such stature exhibiting such a spontaneous reaction. This is what makes the day for any artist, the ultimate form of recognition, and especially from such an eminent art historian from Holland.

This solo exhibition garnered over 2,500 visitors, with representation from 59 countries. There was also generational presence from both ends of the spectrum - parents pushing their children in prams to senior citizens and art enthusiasts in wheel chairs. Encouraging was a young father patiently explaining each and every painting to his very young two year old son still sitting in his pram, very quiet and absorbing.

Enthusiasts from all walks of life, from student to individuals who have reached the highest pinnacle of their profession studying the paintings with interested expressions. In the one-and-half hours guided tour, the artist regaled the audience with personal stories of concept, ideas and inspirations.

The paintings speak volumes about history, race, culture, search of identity, bonding, re-examination of relationships, memories, fragilities and impermanence. Some have moved viewers to tears, others have provoked introspection. Visitors' written comments have been very revealing of their impressions and feelings. The colours applied and the concepts and messages contained therein have affected viewers in more ways than one. They relate. They reached out. They speak to you, touch you. They have soul - not just canvas and paint.

'Trilogy of Questions' is a contemporary piece and is out of the box, born out of man-made issues, of national proportion. If not reined in, will lead to a future of regrets. The youth are our hope - nurture them correctly.

'Wait For Me There' tweaks at your heart strings, recalling lost moments and leading you back to memories of better times.
